Void Flag

Rope; Bamboo; Acrylic paint; Black pigment; Soil; Cotton.

Based on the Hindu sigil practice of Yantras -geometric shapes cast to mark entry points to god-worship and metaphysical practices – this shape denotes feminine creative power and the abyss, void or unknown. Woven upon a thin bamboo loom and without a fixed warp, the grain is impacted by the shape and pattern of the rope and the uneven pull of the weave upon it. Emerging from a sītā or furrow, it represents the metaphysical power of the void to actualise changes in matter. Used in the making of Sītā means furrow as a denomination of Void territory.

Void Flag was created on site at AADK Portugal under the curation of Vania Rovisco. The object was created to be an essential aspect of the performative intervention in Sita Means Furrow. It was first exhibited at Nowhere in Lisbon, Portugal under the curation of Dr. Cristiana Tejo in a show titled ‘Of her I know only’.
